Finding Firenze

Florence, Tuscany, Italy
Saturday, July 23, 2011

The sun was beaming on the Roman capitol, and several of its visitors took refuge at the huge Roma Termini railway station. Many of them decided to go up north, on the very train that was our only one without pre-booked seats. The train was crowded, hot and crowded, so we antianticipated* with mild bemusement a four hour sweat lodge ride to Firenze. However, as the locomotive steamed northwards, passengers got off, and after an hour we even found seats to rest upon. As the rain washed the train as it ran through Tuscany, we had an acceptably pleasant ride through the beautiful Italian landscape. In Firenze, or Florence to the English-speaking, renaissance artists come a dime a dozen. Michelangelo's rather famous statue of David Goliathbane can often be found there, and a replica can always be found there. With big piazzas, narrow alleys and lavish parks, Firenze is indeed a beautiful city. The sun was shining, they had cheese on their pizzas and the Ponte Vecchio bridge , with its many shops on top, was well worth the stop. And soon the land of the antique and the renaissance was to be changed to a land of baroque and alpinists, as we boarded the night train to Wien.
